Old-fashioned Types of Driveway Sealers for Asphalt

There are three basic types of driveway sealers for asphalt:
1. Simple Emulsified Asphalt
2. Refined Coal Tar Sealers
3. 100 Percent Man-made Acrylic Polymer Sealers.

Simple Emulsified Asphalt

The simple asphalt emulsion sealers offer the lowest levels of protection.  This type of driveway sealer basically contains the same asphalt that was used to bind the sand and gravel together in the first place.  This protective coating will oxidize and get brittle just like the asphalt you are trying to protect!  When it comes to types of driveway sealers for asphalt, simple emulsified offers the least protection.   Hyperflex Rubber Parking Lot & Driveway Sealer not only reduces oxidation, but it protects against freeze and thaw cycles.

Refined Coal Tar Sealers

Another type of driveway sealers for asphalt uses refined coal tar.  Advantages of refined coal tar are that it is not dissolved easily by gasoline and oil and UV rays do not readily make it brittle.   There are many coal tar products available.  Some of them have additional additives such as rubber and rubber-like polymers and often contain fine sand and clays. The sand makes the sealers more durable. The clays make the sealers easier to apply. Many communities are currently outlawing coal tar and other asphaltic coatings because of this dangerous run-off. A "green" product - Hyperflex® fits EPA recommendations - Does not wash away asphaltic carcinogens down sewers due to rain and snow.

100 Percent Man-Made Acrylic Polymer Sealers

Out of all the types of driveway sealers for asphalt, acrylic sealers are one of the top rated…and most expensive (costing twice as much as refined coal sealers).  They contain almost 100 percent man-made ingredients. These sealers are unaffected by sunlight and air and stay flexible for 6-8 years. Hyperflex® Driveway sealer is less expensive than traditional acrylic polymer sealers and can last up to 10 years on your driveway!
